Backlinks 101 – Pt. 3

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Things that we should be able to deduce from these 2 case studies:

  • Backlinks are very important. (70% of SEO is backlinks)
  • Backlinks drive à KW rankings. KW rankings drive à Search Traffic (these are the 3 key SEO Metrics).* see attached for more.
  • Creating Backlinks is easy!
  • Anchor Text (the keywords used in backlinks) Matters.
  • If an HTML backlink (i.e. Download Sims 3) is not an option, an image backlink (with Alt=”Download Sims 3” which SEs can read, is a great 2nd option).
  • Google’s algo reacts swiftly and decisively to changes in “link equity” to a page (backlinks entering a page – backlinks leaving a page = link equity)
  • While it’s great to pull link equity from our vast network to a page we want to promote, this does not help our global link equity.  That means, what we gain for one page, we’ve lost from others in ranking position and traffic. Therefore, we’ve got to have an “EXTERNAL” backlink strategy as well. (When RT takes that banner off all of their pages as in Case 1 above for example, and if there have been no external backlinks added to the page, it will fall back down the rankings.)
  • The ‘highest traffic volume period” is still to come for both RT (summer 09) & D2D (June 1 09) releases ( 1 & 2 above). To have a new page rank well on a specific product launch date, a backlink strategy must start well before that launch date.
  • Every time we link out to a External partner, we lose link equity. Every time we gain a link back from an External partner we gain link equity.
  • We need to be almost neurotic J about containing and increasing link equity to our pages/site/network if we want traffic numbers to increase.
  • There is another, HUGE!!! side- benefit of crating backlinks that needs to be mentioned… Referrals by Human Visitor (who click on the links – right?) So even if you tell me Search Traffic is only 35% of total traffic, I want to focus on getting people from other sites back to our site, not from Search Engines, I’d tell you the same thing: Backlinks are the main driver of referral traffic from other sites as well, and so really, accounts for as much as 80% or more of all traffic to the site:

searh_traffic_referrals

  • There are manual ways to acquire backlinks (as above shown) and ways which users can generate their own: User Generated Links (UGL). We need both.
  • We need to provide a level of functionality on our pages that creates opportunities for users (AND ENCOURAGES THEM) to embed links on other pages/sites for us.
  • Knowing what we know now (that we know how to get to #1 ranking for an annual release, or a new product release as shown above and the corresponding traffic that it creates), doesn’t it make sense to apply this across all our objet pages; all Game/Movie/Celeb names (our bread and butter keywords)?
  • Finally, I will reiterate that the first step for a great backlink strategy is good keyword analysis/targeting for your site.

I hope this gives you an overview of what backlinks are, and why it’s so closely linked to our success as a company. I will also tell you that besides the branding aspect of a domain name and the content on the site, the value of a domain name if you were to sell it, is directly related to the number of backlinks pointing to it. By building backlinks to a domain, we are adding worth to it over time.

Backlinks” are the new ‘black’ at IGN. It’s in style, in vogue, there should be a new game made about acquiring backlinks to a website….Please make it your mantra, put “backlinks” on the bumper of your car, chat, about it, text about it, scream it from a mountain top, mention it at your next cocktail party, when you call your mom, etc….

Backlinks 101 – Pt. 2

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009
  1. Case Study 1 – RT

Wednesday (April 15th) this is where RT’s Summer Movie Preview (With the new on-page design) was ranking:

‘summer movie preview” Google rank was position 53, Yahoo rank NA (more than 100)

(It was also noted that there were only 11 external backlinks to this URL (acquired in the last year) – that were of negligible contribution to the page’s authority. So basically they started with nothing.)

Monday (April 20th) this is where RT’s Summer Movie Preview (No change to on-page design) is ranking:

summer movie preview” Google rank is now at 10, Yahoo rank #1! (This is an amazing result in that Yahoo drives 2x as much traffic as Google for this vertical –and- they are also one of our main competitors! They also rank #1 in Yahoo for “Summer Movies”!)

Corresponding Traffic Uptake Shown in Google Analytics:

RT3

How did they do it?  An image link on the top of every page of RT (with “summer movie previews” in the image alt tag) Great Job RT!

  1. Case Study 2 – D2D

Wednesday (April 15th) – ranking for targeted keyword phrases shown – (not bad already):

D2Dstats4-15

Monday (April 20th) – ranking for same keyword phrases with no on-page optimization – (better for Google):

D2Dstats4-21

This is significant not only because we improved our net ranking across 4 keywords, 80 positions in Google, but also because we can clearly see that the improvement was greatest for the keyword phrases Google considers most related to (in the same order as) the anchor text in the backlinks that produced the lift:  (“Sims 3 Download” 7->6 ∆1^, ”Buy Sims 3” ∆6^, “Download Sims 3” 11->3 ∆8^, “Sims 3” ∆66^ ).

Corresponding Traffic Uptake Shown in Google Analytics:

downloadSims3

How did they do it?  A clean HTML link (with the right keywords) in the anchor text on partner sites as shown – great Job D2D!

Backlinks 101 – Pt. 1

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

Working for a major interactive media company for over 2 years, on an in-house SEO team,  I got the rare chance to interact with some of the best in the business, and let me tell ya, I learned a lot! Each of us had some specialization – we bounced knowledge and ideas off of each other and the cross-pollinazation allowed us to be a much greater force than the sum of our parts.

Collectively, we wrote some 20 or 30 best practices guides on every SEO topic imaginable and kept them in a wiki. A lot of my posts get thier inspiration from all that work we did for the impressive family of sites we worked on. Surprisingly,  for one of the most important areas of SEO – backlinks, external linking, link equity, link juice and the likes – we did not provide comprehensive guidance on or provide a best practices guide for.

So  I wrote one, very basic, without the help of my peers (that’s another story…) targeted at those that know almost nothing about backlinks.  Here it is – enjoy! :)

Backlinks 101

I wanted to take some time to help us as a team and company build a solid foundation of what backlinks are and why their important for our global traffic and business strategy.

This case study  begins by assuming you don’t know what a backlink is. But it quickly builds and ties in key points which you will need to know to drive your business and design decisions in the future. Therefore, I ask that you please take the time to read it though – or save it for when you have time – and keep it as a reference as there are some very important things that I’m counting on you to know at this stage before we build upon this foundation. Hope you enjoy it. J With that said,

Backlinks are, links pointing from other pages/sites to the page you want to rank #1 in google/yahoo for.

Links (votes) from pages to your website are called 'backlinks' - shown by red arrows.

I wanted to highlight two examples that I was lucky enough to record the before and after affects for, in the last week. They are:

  1. One site we wanted to improve ranking for “Summer Movies Preview”
  2. And on another, “Sims 3 Download”

First, it’s extremely important to note, that both of these search queries (the Keyword Phrases in quotes above) were found to have “high search traffic volume’ from Google/Yahoo via keyword research. (i.e. Don’t bother with backlinks until you clearly know what you’re targeting (and have a clear way to measure the delta*).)

(* I need to do a full blog on this – look for something like, “Don’t even begin SEO without this…” )

Keyword Research with pushback!

Friday, July 24th, 2009

On my whiteboard at work it says, and I quote:

Every day is an affirmation of my total SEO dominance!

While that’s pretty scary, I think SEOs need #1 to pump themselves up to achieve their grand task and #2 diffuse some of that ego when they do achieve it, as well as #3 just receive the recognition that the so well deserve for helping companies stay on top of the SERPs (SE result pages)

I analyze tons of data and I’m all about the indicators that the data tells me, both from websites and those that manage (or mis manage) them.

Here’s a quick example of something that happened to me today at a major  company I work for (no names please ;).

I hold bi-weekly meetings with project teams and as a prelude to today’s meeting I wrote an email which explained what the meeting was about, and it served as a caption for the photo I sent with it:

“…for cheats, codes, guides,  “<game name> variant”, etc.;  search volume data, a representative URL (the template that Google is ranking), ranking position data, an on-page audit score and what I consider the biggest opportunities for  Search Traffic improvement are highlighted in blue. (The blue to the right in the median ranking column, not the big blue block that covers the urls)”

kwsummarywopportunity3

This impressive piece of work took my analytics guru and I quite a while to compile -months really,  as it’s based on an aggregation of a pool of 40 kws across 10 modifiers and sampled weekly.

(SEO: It’s a great way to see which templates on your site Google is ranking for particular kws you are targeting.  Once you know that, besides tweaking each template to get a better ranking, you can also for example, note if the same template ranks for 2, 3, or 4  or more keywords and then decide how you can split it up, create new pages, etc. so that each page will rank better, for fewer keywords.  –> (like if you have a page that ranks for both “Grand Theft Auto 4 cheats” (say in Google pos 8 ) and “Grand Theft Auto 4 Codes” (say in Google pos 5 )  you can create a new page for one of them – the pos 8 one (cause ya don’t want to screw up what ya got at pos 5) – and then focus both your on-page optimization and off-page to refocus each page more tightly on that one Keyword phrase.)

So what’s the pushback? Well, let’s just say you need to find the right audience. I’ll leave you with that till tomorrow…. Please let me know if you have any questions. Tks for tuning in!
