4. Submit to Blog Directories

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

While you may be doing a great job and a lot of editorial effort to keep your blog fresh and entice users to pick up your feeds via “subscribe” widgets (are you?)
Subscribe to this Feedrss2

(Cool video to show users what rss is, why it’s cool and how to subscribe to feeds – can be placed on blogs to educate users- see my home page) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0klgLsSxGsU)

there’ s still a vast world of blog directories you can use to get your stories out there and build valuable inbound links for your blog and your business. Here are some of the more popular Blog Directories* that pass page rank:

a. Best of the Web Blog Search PR6
b. Bloggeries PR3
c. Blog Hub PR7
d. Blog Search Engine PR4
e. Blog Universe PR3
f. Technorati PR9

(* A full list of blog directories is included in the appendix.)

Rather than copying and pasting new content in these directories repeatedly (like with other submission methods), all you need to do is submit the blog name, url and category once to each directory. That’s the beauty of blog submissions.

There  are 3 more parts to this ‘Submit to Blog Directories” blog- post so stay tuned for more blogging backlinks tips!!!

2. Submit to Niche Directories

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Niche Directories have a top level domain (or content on that domain) which is related to your niche. This also includes niche sections of news sites. They are typically more flexible than General Directories when it comes to anchor text (see appendix 1) and they’re free! Submitting sites, mini-sites, sections and features of your webpage to niche directories that focus on a specific industry can provide a lot of value. The way to do this is just to create an account profile, and submit.

Here’s an example of niche directories that allow you to submit pages*:

  1. Games – free – http://www.directorycritic.com/games-directory-list.html – PR3
  2. Games – free – http://www.exogama.com/general/cheats/ – PR4
  3. Games – free – http://www.arcadeforce.com/ – PR3
  4. Games – free – http://game.nnhit.com/ – PR3
  5. Games – free – http://club-cheats.com/ – PR3
  6. Movies – free – http://www.tmz.com/ – PR 7
  7. Movies – free – http://www.imdb.com/ – PR8
  8. Movies – free – http://movies.nytimes.com/pages/movies/index.html – PR7
  9. Entertainment – http://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/ – PR4
  10. Entertainment – free – http://www.examiner.com/San_Francisco-Arts_and_Entertainment.html – PR4

(*’Content editors for each site can know the best niche directories for their content.)

Have editors (or yourself) create accounts and post content in 5-10 of their favorite niche directories regularly and you’ll have backlinks pouring in from every IP imaginable in no time!

1. Submit to General Directories

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Here are some of the more prominent directories that are worth investing in*:

  1. dmoz  – free – http://www.dmoz.org/ – PR8
  2. Yahoo Directory – $299 annually – http://dir.yahoo.com/ PR8
  3. Business.com $299 annually – http://www.business.com/ PR7
  4. Best of the web – $99.95 annually – http://botw.org/ – PR6
  5. Joe Ant – free- http://www.joeant.com/ – PR5

(* A full list is included in appendix 1)

IGN_DMOZ_backlinks2

The action here is to create an account, and submit your ranking pages (object pages) listed in the appropriate page or section of each one of these directories (as shown above for DMOZ) such that they link back to site*. If top-listed competitors for your kws are using them, it’s even more important to be on par.

(*Notice that DMOZ and other “General Directories” have guidelines that may not allow you to use “SEO Friendly” link anchor text (see appendix 1) to link back to your site. Niche directories, discussed next, allow you to overcome this shortcoming. Still, General directories have their place in the 7 Step Plan because they are highly authoritative and by linking to them pass authority to your site.)

Backlinks 102 – The backlinks action plan cont.

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Now that we know who will be doing the backlinking, let’s take a look at what will they’ll be doing. Here, I’ve outline a 7 step plan for backlink success:

7 Step Action Plan for Backlink Success

  1. Submit to General Directories
  2. Submit to Niche Directories
  3. Submit to Article Directories
  4. Submit to Blog Directories
  5. Bookmarking, RSS, Badges, Widgets (UGL – User Generated Linking)
  6. Connecting with Social Media
  7. SERP Link Building (Link Ninja)

Notice this is just an expansion of the first list of 4 implementation categories to include the different type of submissions)

Directory Submissions generally let you place a line of text with a backlink. Article Directories allow you to submit articles that backlink to your site and Blog directories pull your content directly from you blog once you set it up. This allows your content and backlinks to spread to many other sites and blogs.

Let’s now take a closer look at each one of these ‘vehicles’ (directories, blogs, social media, etc), while keeping in mind the goal of building as many backlinks as possible to your most important pages / for the most important kws you are targeting for your site.*

(* Something that deserves your full attention – which corrects a common error which many of us make – ‘how to create the link itself’. In the appendix (i), is the “SEO friendly linking methods’ which need to be used to produce maximum SEO benefit for backlinks.)

Continued next time…. (nice weekend!:)

Backlinks 102 – The Backlinks Action Plan

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Backlinks Action Plan

Last time, I drove home the importance of backlinks as a vital part of a core SEO strategy – not only for search traffic, but also for referral traffic which together, comprise roughly 80-90% of all traffic – and that for most part, they’re pretty easy to implement.  (Please refer to my “backlinks 101” doc, for a quick review of the basics.)

Today, I’d like to outline a clear action plan by focusing on not only  what should be done, but who should do it, how it should be done, how to structure these activities along with some examples of what a typical day of backlinking is like. (This is applicable to both enterprise level sites as well as the one man show.)

From an implementation standpoint, backlink attribution falls into 4 categories. These 4 categories can be assigned resources according to their corresponding skill sets:

4 Backlink Implementation Categories:

  1. Content Submission – editorial (content producers)
  2. User Generated Linking – engineering (design & development)
  3. Social Media – a combination of both, editorial & engineering
  4. SERP Link building – SEO, outreach, biz dev

Now that we know who will be doing the backlinking, let’s take a look at what will they’ll be doing. In my next post, I’ll outline a 7 step plan for backlink success – get ready to win!
